The programme to provide free solar panels for 25,000 low-income households will be launched once the Cabinet approval is received, the Urban Development and Housing Ministry said.

Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that it is expected to add 500 megawatts of renewable energy to the national grid from this initiative.

The project will be implemented in two phases, and Minister Ranatunga said 10,000 houses will be powered with electricity from solar panels under the first phase.

Under the second phase, 15,000 houses will be powered with electricity from solar panels.
