A fuel train transporting oil from Kolonnawa to Batticaloa derailed early this morning (18) between Hingurakgoda and Gal Oya stations after colliding with a herd of wild elephants.

Four fuel tankers derailed, with two toppling over.

The train engine and an additional compartment also went off the tracks.

Two elephants were killed in the collision, and several others were critically injured.

The derailment, which occurred at 3:30 a.m., severely damaged the railway track, halting all services on the Batticaloa-Colombo line.

Trains scheduled for today have been canceled as the Railway Department works to clear the site.
