It is reported that the Executive Council of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna has decided to remove Prof. G.L. Peiris from the post of party chairman.
SLPP General Secretary – Sagara Kariyawasam says that the decision was taken when the Executive Council met last week.
He adds that two proposals are currently being considered over the appointment of a new Chairman.
He claims that one proposal states that a senior politician should be appointed to the post while the other states that a well recognized person in the civil society should be appointed.
Several rounds of discussions in this regard were also held, he adds.
Noting that they intend to appoint a new party chairman as soon as possible, Mr. Kariyawasam further adds that it is also planned to scrap the party membership of persons who had joined other parties.
As a maiden step, the party membership of those who had decided to contest the LG polls from other parties, will be scrapped, he further notes.
