General Amnesty declared for Tri-Forces absentees

The Ministry of Defence has declared a month long General Amnesty from April 20 – May 20, 2024 to Tri-Forces absentees, enabling them to receive an official discharge from their respective services.
Accordingly, Tri-Forces absentees will be able to receive their discharge from military service and any financial obligations or amount due should be settled prior to their discharge, the Defence Ministry states, adding that this General Amnesty is applicable to absentees who have been Absent without Leave (AWOL) prior to 02 April 2024.

Absentees who are presently abroad can also obtain discharge without reporting to their respective regiments conforming to following requirements:
a. Those seeking discharge should have no pending disciplinary actions taken against them apart from that of being AWOL.
b. Should have clearance from the Department of Immigration and Emigration confirming their travel abroad was done with legal documents and not on forged documents or by illegal means.

c. It should be noted that this amnesty does not apply to those who had gone AWOL and failed to return to the country after attending foreign courses funded by the government or courses offered to Tri Forces by foreign institutes, and those who had proceeded on diplomatic missions or any other requirements.

2 ex-heads of govt. institutions, arrested

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has arrested two former Chairmen on corruption charges.

Former Chairman of the Fisheries Corporation – Upali Liyanage and former SriLankan Airlines Chairman – Nishantha Wickremesinghe have been arrested in this manner.

However, Liyanage, who was produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayathunga, was released on three sureties amounting to Rs. 5 million.

The body of the undergraduate who had gone missing at the Port City beach, has been found.

The body was found during a search by divers.

Undergrad goes missing at Port City beach while snorkeling

A 24-year-old university student from Asgiriya, Gampaha, has gone missing yesterday morning (June 26) while swimming in the sea off the Colombo Port City beach.

According to the police, the student, a resident of Gampaha, was part of a group of students from the Universities of Colombo and Moratuwa who had visited the artificial beach and engaged in snorkelling.

The student failed to resurface, prompting a complaint to the Colombo Port Police.

Lifeguards later recovered the snorkeling gear believed to be belonging to the missing student.

A joint search operation involving Navy divers from the Colombo Port and Rangala Navy Division is currently underway. Further investigations are underway by the Colombo Port Police.
