German national to contest in Sri Lanka’s LG polls

Maria Benanza, a German national who recently acquired Sri Lankan citizenship, has deposited her nomination to contest as an independent candidate in the 2025 Local Government elections.

She will be running for a seat in the Galewela Pradeshiya Sabha and has expressed her intention to contest as a means of contributing to positive change in Sri Lanka.

Court order issued against FSP protest (Update)

Sri Lanka Police have obtained a court order from the Fort Magistrate’s Court against the planned protest by the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) and the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) today (April 05). 

The order prevents members of both groups from entering the Colombo Fort and Galle Face areas today, police said.

FLSP to hold protest in Colombo today

The Front Line Socialist Party (FLSP) is to hold a protest demonstration in Colombo today (April 05).
The protest is titled ‘No Agreements To Betray the Country to Indian Dominion.

In a special media briefing held yesterday (April 04),  FLSP Chief Secretary Kumar Gunaratnam also raised concerns on the agreements that are to be signed between Sri Lanka and India during the ongoing visit of Indian PM – Narendra Modi.

Visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Sri Lanka on the invitation of President Anura Kumara Disanayake, visited the Presidential Secretariat this morning (April 05).

Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by President Anura Kumara Disanayake upon his arrival at the Presidential Secretariat.

Currently, a joint media briefing and the official ceremony of exchanging bilateral agreements signed between the two countries.

Sri Lankan books gifted to National Library Board of Singapore

A consignment of Sri Lankan books from Sri Lanka National Library and Documentation Services Board were officially handed over to the National Library Board of Singapore on 02 April 2025 at the Central Public Library section premises.

High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Singapore, Senarath Dissanayake officially handed over the consignment of books to Deputy Director, Partnership and Strategy of the National Library Board of Singapore, Michelle LAU.

The handover of books took place as part of cultural promotion between the two countries and is expected to enhance people-to-people connections and mutual understanding. The High Commissioner and the Deputy Director discussed the possibilities of carrying out similar programmes in the future. The Deputy Director of the National Library Board thanked the High Commissioner and the National Library and Documentation Services of Sri Lanka for the handover of the book consignment.

Minister of the High Commission, Priyanga Nanayakkara and the Assistant Director of Partnership and Strategy Group of the National Library Board of Singapore, Averil Tan were also present on the occasion.
