Girlfriend from security forces kidnaps boyfriend

Four people, including a girl from the security forces, were arrested early this morning (05) in connection with the kidnapping of a young man who ended the relationship with the security forces girl.

The Pinwatta Police said four residents of Wadduwa area have been arrested.

The suspects were arrested following a complaint made by the young man and his mother that he was abducted by the suspects who arrived in a three-wheeler at Pinwatta in Alubomulla last evening (04).

Investigations revealed that the abducted young man and the security forces girl who allegedly abducted him were in a relationship. The man had been abducted after he had refused to marry her.

Police said the young man was released after being kept in an abandoned house.

Police are conducting investigations to find the driver and the three-wheeler in which the suspects arrived to kidnap the man who works at a private company.

The suspects were to be produced in the Panadura Magistrate’s Court today (05).

Ex-Immigration Controller pleads guilty

Controller of Immigration and Emigration – Harsha Illukpitiya, today (July 01) unconditionally pleaded guilty before the Supreme Court in a case related to contempt of court.

The charge stemmed from his failure to comply with a court order related to the e-visa issuance process.

The Supreme Court announced that sentencing will take place on July 24.

Seat belt compulsory for bus drivers from today

The National Transport Commission (NTC) has announced that starting today (July 01), it will be mandatory for all bus drivers to wear seat belts, with strict penalties for non-compliance.

Under the MotorTraffic Act, bus drivers are legally required to wear seat belts, but a rise in accidents due to drivers ignoring this rule has prompted the authorities to re-enforce it.

Police confirmed that action will be taken against drivers who fail to comply.

Seat belts to be made mandatory for all passengers in expressways

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport has also stated that wearing seat belts will be made mandatory to all passengers of light vehicles travelling on expressways from August 01, 2025.
