The government has extended the special commodity levy of Rs. 50 per kilogram on imported sugar until December 31, through a Gazette notification issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as Minister of Finance.

Originally set to expire on November 1, the levy, introduced last year, aims to stabilize local prices amid global market fluctuations.

Former minister Manusha Nanayakkara criticized the decision, stating that the government is retaining taxes on essential items despite previous promises to reduce them, specifically highlighting the tax on sugar imports.
