The prevailing showery condition in the south-western part of the country is expected to continue further, the Department of Meteorology said today.
It said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western Provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya Districts.
Fairly heavy showers of above 75mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Eastern and Uva Provinces and in Polonnaruwa and Mullaitivu Districts during the evening or night.
The department requested the people to take precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that 25,863 people in 10 districts have been affected by the inclement weather.
People belonging to 6,250 families residing in the districts of Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Gampaha, Matara, Galle, Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam, Kurunegala and Jaffna are affected by the adverse weather. The largest number of affected people were reported from Gampaha District.
Furthermore, the Irrigation Department has issued flood risk warnings to the people living in the areas around the Kuda River, which is a sub-basin of the Kalu River, people living in the lower valley of the Nilwala River, and to the people living in lower areas of Ging and Attanagalu Oya.
DMC Kalutara District Assistant Director Col. Aravinda Amarasekara said that a sluice gate has been opened in the Kukule Ganga Reservoir and the volume of water used for power generation has been reduced to 60 cubic meters per second.
