Hoping to conclude FTA with SL as soon as possible – Chinese State Councilor

A meeting between a delegation led by the State Councilor of China – Ms. Shen Yiqin and Speaker of Sri Lanka – Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was held at the Parliament yesterday (20). 

Cabinet Ministers, State Ministers, Members of Parliament, Secretary General of Parliament Ms. Kushani Rohanadeera, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Mr. Chaminda Kularatne as well as Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka – Mr. Qi Zhenhong were among those present.

The Speaker expressed his gratitude for the support provided for Sri Lanka’s economic development as well as all kinds of cooperation provided by China in Sri Lanka. Also, the Speaker said that the development activities being carried out in the country with the cooperation of China, including the Colombo Port City, are being successfully implemented. The Speaker stated that he hopes to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Speaking, State Councilor Shen Yiqin had stated that the Chinese government is eager to provide the necessary financial support for the emergency humanitarian assistance, including the provision of uniforms for the school children of Sri Lanka.

Also, the State Councilor said that through the development of political, economic, cultural and people-to-people relations, the mutual trust and practical cooperation between the two countries will grow and thus the close relationship between the two countries will be further strengthened. She further stated that she hopes to work with Sri Lanka to conclude the Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement as soon as possible.

Member of Parliament – Thalatha Athukorala informed the delegation about the measures taken by the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus for the advancement of women in Sri Lanka and requested China’s support for the future activities of the Caucus.

Colombo Fort – KKS express to resume daily

Sri Lanka Railways says the Colombo Fort – Kankesanthurai Express train will resume daily operations within this month.

It is operating only on weekends at the present.

SLR says that the daily operations will now commence following capacity improvements.

Doctors say rest is crucial for children with flu symptoms

Pediatricians have warned that children showing symptoms of influenza may suffer heart damage if they engage in sports or strenuous physical activity.

Dr. Deepal Perera, Consultant Pediatrician at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, has advised parents to keep children with such symptoms at home and avoid sending them to school or preschool.

He has also noted that there are rising cases of Dengue, Chikungunya and Diarrhea among children as well.

KKS police station receives anonymous threat call

The Kankesanthurai Police Station has reportedly received an anonymous phone call alleging that around 10 police stations in the Northern Province would come under attack.

The call was received between 1:15 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. on 11 June, police said.

Police investigations have been launched in connection with the anonymous threat.

Meanwhile, the Police Media Division stated that enhanced security measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of police stations across the Northern Province.
