India offers a series of capacity building training to SL Police

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka says that they have been facilitating tailor made capacity building training courses for police personnel at several police training institutions.

A statement by the Indian High Commission says :

On the request of the Sri Lanka Police, the High Commission of India has been facilitating tailor made capacity building training courses for the personnel of the Sri Lankan Police at the premier police training institutions viz. Central Detective Training Institute (CDTI), Jaipur; CDTI, Hyderabad; CDTI, Kolkata and National Security Guard (NSG), Manesar in India.

India regularly offers fully funded training slots to Sri Lankan Police personnel for various training courses to enhance the skills of the officers. Since the beginning of year 2024, over 60 police personnel, including junior, mid-level and senior officers, have benefited from the high-quality training courses on various subjects such as crime scene management, artificial intelligence and cyber crime investigation, and VIP security training. These courses are offered by Government of India (GoI) under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) and the “Aid to Sri Lanka” programme. More than 130 Sri Lankan police officers are expected to be trained in India this year.

A batch of 23 senior police officers recently left for New Delhi to attend a specially designed two-week course starting on 18 June. Before leaving for the course, the officers interacted with H.E. Shri Santosh Jha, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka on 13 June 2024. Currently they are undergoing training in NIA in various subjects such as terror financing, internal security dynamics, Islamic and other religious fundamentalism etc.

Harin awards Rs. 1M to Olympic athletes

Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Harin Fernando has awarded financial sponsorship cheques of Rs. 1 million each to six athletes participating in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. 

Additionally, prize money totaling Rs. 1280 lakh was distributed to athletes and coaches who secured medals and top-eight positions in the last Asian and Paralympic Games in Hangzhou, China.

Young sprinter Tharushi was among the highly rewarded, receiving Rs. 15 million for her Asian Games gold medal along with another Rs. 2.5 million for her relay medal.

Minister Fernando emphasized the significance of encouraging athletes even amidst the country’s financial crisis. 

He expressed his commitment to promoting sports and highlighted the importance of discipline in representing Sri Lanka. He urged athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving victory, meeting the high expectations of the nation.

Former INSSSL Director General Asanka Abeygunasekara arrested

The former Director General of the Institute of National Security Studies of Sri Lanka (INSSSL) Asanka Abeygunasekara has been arrested by police.

Abeygunasekara, against whom there was a pending open warrant over a case filed by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake this morning (21), police said.
