The Japanese Government has agreed to provide a grant of 300 million yen to Sri Lanka for the procurement of 28 garbage compactors.
This initiative is part of the “Clean Sri Lanka” program, which aims to transform the country into a clean, sustainable, and environmentally responsible model. The lack of advanced waste management infrastructure has been identified as a major obstacle to achieving this vision.
The grant, provided at the request of the Sri Lankan government, will be used to enhance the waste management capacity of local government institutions in the Western, Northern, and Eastern Provinces.
The project will be supervised by the Ministry of Public Administration, along with provincial and local governments.
The distribution plan includes 14 compactors for the Western Province, 8 for the Eastern Province, and 6 for the Northern Province.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, to obtain the grant under the Japan Economic and Social Development program.
