JICA to resume funding for BIA Terminal 2 expansion

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has agreed to resume the 2nd terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) extension project, under a concessionary loan scheme.

Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Aviation said that JICA agreed to provide Rs. 170 Billion for the construction that will proceed under the concessionary loan scheme.

After the completion of the Terminal, the airport will be able to handle 16 million passengers per annum, from the current number of 6 million, and eventually ease the air traffic movement.

JICA delegates had informed Minister Nimal Siripala that an agreement for the concessionary loan scheme will be signed soon, and tenders for the construction process will be called for in September.

CMC mayor assumes duties

Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People’s Power (NPP) officially assumed duties as Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Mayor today (June 18).

The most talked-about candidate in the 2025 Local Government Election, Balthazaar was elected the 26th Mayor of the CMC while receiving 61 votes following a secret ballot on Monday (June 16).

She becomes the second female Mayor of CMC, following Rosy Senanayaka.
