Landslide warnings continue with heavy rains

Showery conditions in the South-western part of the country is expected to be enhanced during the next few days from today (03), the Department of Meteorology said.

It said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western Provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya Districts.

Fairly heavy showers of above 75mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere, particularly in Eastern and Uva Provinces during the evening or night.

Between 8.30 am yesterday and 5.30 am this morning, the highest rainfall of 69.5 mm was recorded from Akurassa in Matara.

In the meantime, the water level of the Nilwala River continues to rise slightly and the Irrigation Department said that the people of Matara, Akurassa, Malimbada, Athuraliya, Kamburupitiya and Thihagoda should be concerned about this.

The elevated flood levels of the Attanagalu Oya, Kalu and Ging Rivers are now receding.

About 25,863 people have been affected by the heavy rains and most of them in the Western Province.

The number of people affected in the Gampaha and Kalutara Districts of the Western Province is 20,771.

Meanwhile, the landslide warnings issued for eight districts are still in effect, including for several areas in Colombo, Galle, Hambantota, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara and Ratnapura Districts.
