Chairman of Lanka Salt Ltd. – Attorney-At-Law Chaminda Sooriyapatabendi has said that 03 Director Board members have received bonuses of Rs. 125,000 each only after a Director Board decision.

He has made this statement to media in a backdrop where company employees had protested against the move, pointing out that Director Board members appointed to state entities are not eligible to the bonuses received by its employees.

This has been pointed out by the Director General at the Department of Public Enterprises – Mr. P.A.S. Athula Kumara, when a request was made to pay bonuses to 05 Director Board members.

It has also been stated that according to the circular issued by the Ministry of Finance on the payment of bonuses, there are no provisions to pay bonuses to Director Board members.

However, the Chairman of Lanka Salt Ltd. states that the decision to pay the bonuses was taken before they were informed of all this.

He adds the bonus was also granted to the Directors after they had promising in writing to return the money if any issue arises.

Lanka Salt Ltd. is a state investment with the majority of shares being held by the Employees’ Trust Fund.

Last April, the Lanka Salt Ltd. Chairman announced that the entity had recorded its highest turnover and made a net Rs 700 million profit- after- tax for the first time in history.
