Lankan embassy in Kuwait successfully gets compensation for housemaid

A Sri Lankan  housemaid, after a lengthy legal battle, has been awarded a compensation payment of Rs 6.8 million from her employer in Kuwait and returned to the country today, officials said.

The 32 year old woman had been raped several times by the employer’s son and thereafter been forced to undergo an abortion.

The employer,  a public sector employee had placed the woman on an wheelchair and brought to the airport to be sent back to Sri Lanka in March this year. However, Airport authorities said her condition was not good to travel and referred her to the Sri Lankan embassy in Kuwait.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Kuwait, Kandeepan Subramaniam had followed up legal action and after five months had been able to obtain compensation payment for the woman. The compensation amounted to Kuwati Dinars 6,500 (Rs 6.8 million).

The woman, during the period, had been hospitalized and taken care of by the embassy.

No change in Litro Gas prices for December

The Litro Gas Company says that the prices of its domestic LP Gas cylinders will remain unchanged for the month of December 2024.

Chairman of Litro Gas – Channa Gunawardena stated that the company decided to keep the prices of LP gas cylinders unchanged despite the price hike in the global market, in order to provide relief to the consumers.

Accordingly, the prices of Litro LP gas domestic gas cylinders will remain unchanged as follows:

12.5kg – Rs. 3,690
05kg – Rs. 1,482
2.3kg – Rs. 694

Tomorrow’s Parliamentary session to continue until 9.30 pm

It has been decided during the party leaders’ meeting to conduct tomorrow’s (Dec. 04) parliamentary session until 09.30 pm.

Accordingly, the adjournment debate regarding the disaster situation caused by the recent adverse weather conditions will be held from 05.30 pm – 09.30 pm tomorrow.
