Lawyer fined for allowing under-age son to drive car on Southern Expressway

A lawyer who allowed his 15-year-old son to drive his car on the Southern Expressway and his son who drove the car were fined Rs. 55,000 by Panadura Chief Magistrate Champika Rajapaksa.

The fine was imposed on the 42-year-old lawyer and his son residing in Puttalam. In addition, the Magistrate strongly warned them not to engage in such acts in the future.

The lawyer had gone to a relative’s house in Tangalle area with his family members recently and he had allowed his 15-year-old son to drive the car from Mattala to Katunayake on their way back. Another motorist had videoed the incident and had posted it on social media.

The Gelanigama Traffic Police officers of the Southern Expressway, who paid close attention to this matter, identified the owner of the car as a person from the Puttalam area during the investigations conducted through the registration number of the car.

After presenting the lawyer, who is the registered owner of the car, to the Court for the charge of allowing his under-age son to drive the car without a driving licence, a fine of Rs. 25,000 was imposed by the Magistrate and also the son was fined Rs.30,000 for not wearing the seat belt and under-age driving.
