Lectures suspended at Jaffna Uni. as lecturers go on strike

The Jaffna University Teachers’ Union has commenced a strike, withdrawing from conducting all lectures at the university.

Teachers from all faculties have joined the trade union action, citing five key demands as the reason for their protest.

The union has stated that the strike will continue until proper solutions are provided to address their concerns.

Chief among these issues is the failure of the university administration to address the undisciplined behavior of students in the university’s Arts Faculty, along with several other unresolved matters, the Teachers’ Union said.

Dates & venues confirmed for ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup

The ICC have confirmed dates and venues for this year’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

The 13th edition of the Women’s 50-over World Cup will feature 08 teams namely India, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The tournament will run from September 30 – November 02, with five venues across India and Sri Lanka.These venues will be M. Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bengaluru), ACA Stadium (Guwahati), Holkar Stadium (Indore), ACA-VDCA Stadium (Visakhapatnam), and R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo).

The tournament will kick off in Bengaluru on September 30.

The first semi-final will take place in either Guwahati or Colombo on October 29, with the second semi-final to be played the following day on October 30 in Bengaluru.

The two finalists will then have at least two days to prepare for the title decider, with the final of the 2025 Women’s World Cup to be held in either Bengaluru or Colombo on Sunday November 02.

Anudi returns to SL

Anudi Gunasekara, Miss Sri Lanka at the 72nd Miss World pageant, has returned to Sri Lanka following the conclusion of the pageantheld in Hyderabad, Telangana, India on May 31.

The global event, which featured contestants from 108 countries, saw Miss Thailand being crowned as Miss World 2025.

Although Anudi delivered remarkable performances throughout the competition, becoming the first Sri Lankan in history to reach the final rounds in the Head-to-Head and Multimedia categories, she did not advance into the final 40 contestants.

Thanking for her warm welcome in Sri Lanka and for the love and support from Sri Lankans throughout the competition, she pointed out that participating in the Miss World pageant was a once in a lifetime experience.

She also told reporters that she was not expecting to take part in any other pageants.

“I do not intend to take part in any other pageants. My only lifetime desire was to join the Miss world pageant. I achieved that feat. So, I do not think I need to take part in any other pageants,” she said.

Ex-chairman of Lindula-Talawakelle UC, remanded

Former chairman of the Lindula-Talawakelle Urban Council – Asoka Sepala has been arrested today (June 02).

The Colombo Chief Magistrate has ordered to remand the suspect until June 11.

The former chairman has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for causing a loss of Rs. 2.38 million to the government, during the issuance of a tender to lease stall belonging to the Urban Council.

It is said that instead of awarding the tender to the highest bidder, it was given to a lower bidder, resulting in the aforementioned loss.
