The deadline for all candidates who contested the 2025 Local Government (LG) Elections to submit their campaign income and expenditure reports is at midnight today (May 27).
Chairman of the Election Commission (EC) – R.M.A.L. Rathnayake, stated that the deadline will not be extended under any circumstances and that candidates who fail to submit their financial disclosures in accordance with the Election Expenditure Regulation Act No.03 of 2023 will face consequences.
The EC also stated that despite repeated requests, many political parties and independent groups have yet to submit the names of their elected representatives to LG bodies, delaying the publication of the gazette.
According to the EC, this delay has also caused issues in the commencement of council sessions in LG bodies.
Meanwhile, the State Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government stated that all officials have been informed about the proper commencement of meetings for LG bodies.
Deputy Minister – Ruwan Senarath, stated that instructions have been given to commence the work of LG bodies where one political party or independent group holds the majority power.
