Malini didn’t die last week – Gammanpila

Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya – Udaya Gammanpila has claimed that the current government holds resentment toward the recently deceased screen legend Malini Fonseka for entering Parliament during the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration through the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

He made this statement at a media conference held at his party office in Pitakotte yesterday (May 27).

He stated that the National List was specifically created to bring individuals into Parliament who may not be able to win an election but are needed for lawmaking.

Gammanpila said that despite being appointed to Parliament via the National List as a mark of respect for her status as the queen of Sri Lankan Cinema, and not for campaigning for Mahinda Rajapaksa. He added that Malini Fonseka has been unfairly labeled a Rajapaksa loyalist by the government, leading to her humiliation in Parliament by resentful members.

Gammanpila added: “The truth is, Malini didn’t die last week. She died the moment her character was assassinated in Parliament, while she watched it live on TV. That’s when her true death occurred.”

He further stated that the government should have honored her properly after her death, but instead of state honours, only state patronage was provided, committing a historical wrong that cannot be corrected.

The case of a 21-year-old student detained for nearly nine months under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) will be taken up in court today (July 9).

Mohamed Rifai Mohamed Suhail, an aviation student from Mawanella, was arrested in October 2024 after posting a video on Instagram showing the Israeli flag being trampled, BBC Sinhala reported.

He was initially taken into custody by Dehiwala Police near the Israeli consular office for failing to carry his national identity card and later released when the document was produced in court.

However, Suhail was re-arrested and remanded under the PTA in connection with the Instagram video, despite the court previously releasing him without bail. His lawyer alleges that no formal charges have been filed and no evidence has been presented by police to support the detention.

The prolonged incarceration has drawn criticism from rights groups, legal experts, and the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, which has been formally notified. Meanwhile, Suhail’s family has lodged a complaint, calling for his immediate release.
