Man arrested for cutting copper wires from transformers

A man has been arrested by the police while attempting to cut a grounding copper wire from a high-voltage (33,000V) transformer.

The suspect was arrested by the Hali-Ela Police today (March 29) near the Sri Weerasakthi Vinayagar Kovil along the Bandarawela road Hali-ela.

The arrested suspect is a 21-year-old resident of Kahawatta.

13 rolls of copper wire cut from 06 transformers from Bandarawela to Badulla which were concealed in two sacks by the suspect with an accomplice, as well as a motorcycle used in the crime have been taken into Police custody.

Meanwhile, the suspect’s accomplice has fled the scene, and the Hali-Ela Police have launched further investigations to arrest him and determine whether they were involved in similar thefts in other areas of the country.
