An assistant manager of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) died due to an alleged cannula infection yesterday (13).
Previously, he had been admitted to a government hospital in the Galle area about two weeks ago with fever.
Due to the decrease in platelets, he had been administered various medicines including saline through a cannula as per the doctor’s orders.
After a while, he was discharged and went home.
However, he was later on admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital after the hand in which the cannula was attached got swollen.
The tests conducted at the Panadura Base Hospital revealed that he had been infected with a germ and it had spread to the heart.
The doctors have tried to transfer him to another hospital but he died before he was transferred.
The doctors believe that an infection entered the body from the cannula may have caused the death.
