Measures to nab poachers killing wildlife by poisoning water

The Department of Wildlife has stated that there is a racket underway to kill wild animals by poisoning water and then selling the meat.

In a statement, the Department says that these racketeers either create small puddles or use polythene bags near water sources and poison the water. Wildlife that are in search of water during the prevailing drought, are attracted to these water sources and die soon after.

The meat is then sold to pilgrims visiting Kataragama or transported to other areas, the statement adds.

Noting that the consumption of such animals killed by poisoning is harmful, the Department adds that strict measures will be taken against such racketeers and raids to nab such illicit activities have been increased during the drought season.

The Wildlife Department also urges public to immediately inform the 1992 hotline or contact the nearest Wildlife office if they learn any information on such rackets.
