Medin Poya falls today

Buddhist devotees across the world celebrate the Medin Full Moon Poya Day today (13).

This day commemorates several pivotal events in the life of Lord Buddha, including His first visit to His birthplace, Kapilavastu, after attaining Enlightenment.

Medin Poya is also celebrated as a day to honor parents, as it marks the occasion when Lord Buddha visited His father, King Suddhodana, to express gratitude and share the Dhamma.

Additionally, it was on this day that Prince Rahula, the Buddha’s son, entered the monastic order, establishing the tradition of seeking parental consent before ordination.

Other notable events associated with Medin Poya include the enlightenment of Maha Prajapati Gotami, the Buddha’s stepmother, and the introduction of the practice of paying homage to the Buddha’s sacred footprint.

Devotees are expected to engage in religious activities, including visiting temples, observing Sil, and participating in Dhamma discussions, to reflect on the teachings of the Buddha and the importance of gratitude and respect for parents.
