Minor flood risk as heavy showers continue

Due to the Southwest monsoon conditions, the prevailing showery and windy conditions are expected to continue, says the Meteorology Department.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, Southern and Northern provinces.

Very heavy showers about 150mm are likely at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in Western and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Mannar, Galle and Matara districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere of the island, it said.

Strong winds of about 50-60 kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central, Western, Southern and North western provinces and in Trincomalee district.

Fairly strong winds about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times elsewhere of the island.

Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation has warned of a minor flood risk surrounding the Kalu River and Attanagalu Oya.

Kuda River, a tributary of the Kalu River, is at minor flood level in Millakanda.

The Kalu River is at risk level in Putupawula and Magura, while Attanagalu Oya is at minor flood level in Dunamale.

The Kelani River is at risk level in Nagalagam Street, while the Nilwala River is at risk level in Thalgahagoda and Panadugama.

The Department of Meteorology predicted very heavy showers of about 150mm in the Sabaragamuwa province and in the Nuwara-Eliya district.

The Department also predicted heavy showers above 100mm in the Western and North-western provinces and in the Kandy, Mannar, Galle, and Matara districts.

The Met. Department predicted strong winds of about 50-60kmph over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, Western, Southern, and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee district.

Upuldeniya further remanded (Update)

Suspended Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, who was produced before courts today, has been further remanded until June 25.

Suspended Prisons Chief before courts today as well

Suspended Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, who was arrested by the CID on June 09, has been transferred to the Welikada Prison Hospital under special security measures.

The move follows a court order calling for special security measures during his custody.

He was initially taken to the Colombo Remand Prison yesterday (June 10) afternoon and was held there until about 5:00pm before being transferred to a secure ward at Welikada Prison Hospital, where he remains under tight security.

He is to be produced before court today (June 11).

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Anuradhapura Prison, who is currently in remand custody and held at a secure location in Dumbara Prison, is expected to be produced before the Anuradhapura Court today.

Separately, Prisons Commissioner for Operations, Intelligence and Security – Gamini Dissanayake, has been summoned to the CID today for questioning regarding the recent release of an inmate under the Presidential Pardon, which had sparked controversy.

He was questioned for about six hours on June 09 as well.
