A mobile coconut sales programme has been launched to provide coconuts to consumers at an affordable price.
The programme is launched under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife, Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation, and Community Infrastructure.
The first phase of the programme is held today (Oct. 23) in the Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte and the Kaduwela Municipal Council areas.
A press release by the ministry states that mobile coconut sales vehicles have been deployed near the Welikada Police Station in Colombo, the Kirulapone market, the Finance Ministry premises, and the Welikada Police Station in the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council area.
Additional locations include the Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theater in Nugegoda, the Sethsiripaya premises covering Kaduwela and Battaramulla, and near the Coconut Cultivation Board on Denzil Kobbekaduwa Mawatha.
Under this programme, coconuts are to be sold at a price of Rs. 100 – 120.
Initially, the Coconut Cultivation Board is to supply 10,000 coconuts to the market on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Afterwards, 15,000 coconuts are to be released to the market weekly, as per the consumer demand.
The media release states that the Kurunegala Plantations Company and the Chilaw Plantations Company have agreed to supply 1,500 and 3,000 coconuts respectively, on a daily basis.
