MoD clearance needed when ex-servicemen seek Russian visit visa – Sabry

Sri Lanka ex-servicemen applying for visit visas to Russia will now have to get Defence Ministry clearance, Minister of Foreign Affairs M U M Ali Sabry said.

Sabry met the Russian Ambassador in Colombo Levan S Dzhagaryan today (May 29).

On a X post, the minister said, “We addressed the urgent situation of Sri Lankans being deployed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and agreed on immediate steps to resolve these issues.”

“Russia will now require Sri Lanka Defence Ministry clearance for visit visas of ex-servicemen,” he said, adding that the upcoming visit to Russia will enable further discussions to find a solution to this matter.

4 ex-Customs officers sentenced to 35 yrs. RI over bribery charges

The Colombo High Court has sentenced four former officials of Sri Lanka Customs to 35 years of rigorous imprisonment each after they were found guilty of the charges of accepting a bribe of Rs. 125 million in 2015 to release bus spare parts imported for the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).

Furthermore, Colombo High Court Judge Namal Balalle also fined each of them Rs. 125 million while delivering the verdict in the case this morning (06).

The four former officials of Sri Lanka Customs were found guilty over the charges of accepting a bribe of Rs. 125 million from a businessman in the Panchikawatta area in 2015, in order to release from Customs a stock of bus spare parts imported to be supplied for the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).

“Online Safety Act to be amended in line with SC determination”

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath says the government maintains that the Online Safety Act should be amended.

However, it will be amended following a Supreme Court ruling and in line with the Supreme Court’s determinations, he said while addressing the weekly cabinet briefing today (Nov. 06).

He also said that the matter of whether to amend the current Act or to introduce a new one would be taken up in the new Parliament.

The Online Safety Act, which was established to tackle the spread of misinformation online, faces claims of constitutional inconsistencies.
