Monaragala District preferential vote results

Preferential vote results of the Monaragala District in the 2024 General Election have been released.
NPP’s R.M. Jayawardena secured the highest number of preferential votes in the Monaragala District.

H.M. Dharmasena has obtained the highest number of preferential votes for the SJB to secure the only seat for SJB in the district.

National People’s Power (NPP)
1. R.M. Jayawardena – 105,107
2. Ajith Priyadarshana – 54,044
3. Chathuri Gangani – 42,930
4. Ruwan Wijeweera – 40,505
5. Sarath Kumara – 39,657

Validity of re-entry visa extended for Lankans working in Israel

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism has issued a special notice for Sri Lankans working in Israel.

A statement issued by the ministry states :

Due to the unstable situation in the Middle East region, the Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA) of Israel has decided to extend the validity period of the re-entry visa of those who have come to Sri Lanka possessing a re-entry visa with the hope of returning to their respective employments in Israel until 2025.07.31.

Accordingly, as international flights to Israel have started presently, those who came to Sri Lanka on re-entry visa have the possibility to return to work in Israel until 31.07.2025 even after the expiry of the re-entry visa.

All relevant institutions have been informed in this regard.

79 custodial & arrest related deaths in last 5 years – HRCSL

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says that 79 suspects have died in police custody or during arrests over the past 05 years.

Commissioner and Attorney-at-Law Nimal Punchchihewa stated that 49 suspects had died while in custody, while 30 died during arrest operations.

He said that, in response, the Commission has issued new guidelines for the police on proper procedures to follow during and after arrests.

Meanwhile, the Acting Inspector General of Police has circulated these guidelines to all police stations, he further said.

31 nabbed on bribery – corruption charges within 5 months – CIABOC

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) says 31 suspects have been arrested on bribery or corruption charges between January 01 – May 31 this year.

Among those arrested are 08 police officers, including a police inspector, sub-inspector, 04 sergeants, and 02 constables.

The CIABOC also stated that a school principal and 02 Public Health Inspectors were also taken into custody.

Among the latest high profile arrests, former Chairman of the Fisheries Corporation – Upali Liyanage and former SriLankan Airlines Chairman – Nishantha Wickremesinghe were arrested yesterday.

Liyanage, who was produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayathunga, was released on three sureties amounting to Rs. 5 million while Wickremesinghe was remanded until July 01.
