The Northern Fishermen’s Associations have authorities safeguard Sri Lanka’s own seas before focusing on the matters in the Red Sea.

Speaking at a media briefing, spokesman of the collective – Mr. Mohommad Alam has emphasised that Indian fishermen continue to encroach into the Sri Lankan seas.

Mr. Alam says that although the Sri Lankan government is well aware of this, they ignore the matter and keep quiet about it.

The President has pledged to help those far away from the country, when citizens of his own country are starving, he added.

The President should send the warship he is planning to send to the Red Sea to the Palk Strait and station around 100 officials to monitor the maritime boundary instead… So that the security of the Sri Lankan seas can be ensured to control the encroachment of Indian fishermen, he further said.

Noting that the fish found in the 02 Indian vessels apprehended in Delft were valued Rs. 20 million by the Fisheries Department, Mr. Alam pointed out that such vessels have taken away fish worth millions of rupees from the Sri Lankan seas for over 15 years.
