The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a Buddhist monk and another person on suspicion of stealing a T-56 firearm from a guard room adjacent to the Panagoda Army Camp.

The suspects have been residing at a temple in Godagama, Homagama.

A T56 firearm, 4 magazines, 120 rounds of ammunition and a safety bag were stolen from a soldier who was on duty at the guard room near the quarters of the Panagoda Army Camp on March 3.

During the search operations launched following the incident, the police found a magazine containing 30 stolen bullets under a culvert on a byroad located about 100 meters away from the guard room.

The suspects were identified from the CCTV footage obtained from a shop nearby. They were arrested and handed over to the CID on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police for further investigations.
