The Meteorology Department reports continuous rainfall for the next 24 hours in Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces, with cloudy skies and showers or thundershowers expected.
Heavy showers (100 mm) are likely in Eastern and Uva provinces and Matale, Nuwara-Eliya and Polonnaruwa Districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several other places.
Fairly strong winds (30-40 kmph) are expected at times over the Eastern slopes of the Central hills and Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-Western provinces, Hambantota, and Moneragala.
The public is advised to take precautions against strong winds and lightning.
The Disaster Management Centre reports significant rainfall in the upper and mid-stream areas of Malwathu Oya and Gal Oya, with Nachchaduwa reservoir spilling at 3,700 cubic feet per second.
This situation raises the possibility of major floods in lowline areas of Malwathu Oya valley (Vengalacheddikulam, Madu, Mussalei, Nanaddan) and Gal Oya valley (Addalachchenei, Akkaraipattu, Ampara, Damana, Eragama, Madulla, Nindavur, Sammanthurai). Inundated roads may become highly vulnerable and dangerous.
Residents and drivers are advised to exercise caution and Disaster Management Authorities are requested to take appropriate action.
Landslide early warnings have also been issued for some areas in Badulla, Kandy, Kurunegala, and Matale.
Rough seas with strong winds (50-60 kmph) are expected off Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar. Naval and fishing communities are advised to be attentive.
