MP among 18 arrested in Jaffna

Published

Eighteen people including a Parliamentarian were taken into custody by Jaffna police yesterday for violating a court order banning protests within city limits.

Ahila Ilankai Tamil Congress (AITC) MP Selvarajah Kajendren was among those who were arrested for staging a protest against the visit by President Ranil Wickremesinghe who was on a two-day visit to the North.

Earlier police secured a court order against the scheduled protests organised by Tamil political parties and students of the Jaffna University.

The police argued any protest within Jaffna city limits would disturb the peace and events related to the opening of the India-funded state-of-the art cultural centre.

It is reported from police sources that the statements of the arrested persons are being recorded.
