MP threatens policeman over moonshine dealer’s arrest

on

A tense situation had arisen at the Welipenna Police after a ruling party MP had rebuked and threatened a police sergeant for arresting and charging an alleged moonshine dealer, reports say.

The MP in question is said to be a National People’s Power (NPP) MP from Kalutara District.

The sergeant has lodged a complaint logged under CIB (2) 353/40, with the MP’s phone number included, requesting for justice.

The OIC of the Welipenna Police himself has added a log entry stating that the MP had phoned him and inquired whether he was not aware of a sergeant named Ajith attached to his station, who had filed bogus moonshine charges against individuals. The MP had also requested details and the mobile phone number of the sergeant.

The OIC had informed the MP that Ajith is a resident of Meegahathenna and is a relative of Sunil Watagala before texting the mobile phone number. He has added this to the log entry as well.

Later in the day, Sergeant Ajith had informed that the MP had rebuked him on the phone and threatened to transfer him to Vavuniya, the OIC’s log entry further notes.

It is also reported that the sergeant in question has not reported to work since then.

Investigations are underway.
