MPs vote to debate Online Safety Bill

83 MPs have voted in favour of taking up the Online Safety Bill for debate while 50 MPs had voted against it.

Accordingly, the Second Reading Debate of the proposed Bill will continue in the Parliament today (Jan 23).

The relevant debate was scheduled to be held in Parliament today but the Opposition had requested for a Party Leaders meeting on the proposed Bill.

A vote was then taken in Parliament on whether or not to take up the proposed Online Safety Bill will be taken up for debate.

Speaking during a meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Media, Youth, Heritage and New Citizen yesterday (Jan. 22), MPs Gayantha Karunathileka, Iran Wickramaratne and Chandima Weerakkodi had also pointed out to the committee that further time is required to make amendments to the draft bill and that there should be policy amendments in this regard.
