Samagi Jana Balawehaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman, who resigned from Parliament, has told a weekly newspaper that he will file a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court requesting that he be given back the seat in Parliament.

Rahman said that he is currently discussing the matter with his lawyers to file the petition naming the Elections Commission, the Finance Minister, the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and the Attorney General as respondents.

He said that he resigned from Parliament to contest for the post of Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council. However, the local government election has been postponed indefinitely.

He said that he resigned as an MP since the Elections Commission announced that the local government election would be held and that he also deposited bail as a candidate.

Rahman said the government employees who decided to contest in the election have been given their salaries, privileges they are entitled to and the previous jobs back.

“Therefore, I should also be given the relevant privileges and the position of a Member of Parliament,” he said.
