Namal appears before CID ; tells media MR is well

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP – Namal Rajapaksa has arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department to record a statement.

MP Namal Rajapaksa said he was summoned to the CID to record a statement pertaining to his grandmother Daisy Forrest, who was recently arrested and produced in court.

Responding to questions raised by media on recent reports of his father – former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s health, MP Namal has also said that his father was well despite what was said on social media.

USD climbs above Rs. 300 since Sep. 2024

The Sri Lankan rupee has declined against the US dollar today (10), with the spot exchange rate surpassing the Rs. 300 mark for the first time since September 27, 2024.

According to the daily exchange rate data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), the buying rate for the US dollar stands at Rs. 294.13, while the selling rate is recorded at Rs. 303.20.

Meanwhile, the spot exchange rate has been registered at Rs. 301.20 today.

The spot rate reflects the weighted average of all spot transactions carried out in the domestic interbank foreign exchange market, including any market interventions conducted by the CBSL through Requests for Quotations (RFQs) on the previous or most recent business day.

LG Polls : Court orders to re-accept 35 more rejected nominations

The Court of Appeal today (April 10) ordered the relevant Returning Officers to re-accept nearly 35 rejected nomination papers.

The nominations were rejected due to issues arising from the certification of birth certificates by Justices of the Peace and the oath taken under the 7th Schedule to the Constitution.

This order was issued when several petitions filed by political parties and independent groups against the rejection of the relevant nomination papers were taken up before a bench of judges comprising Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mohamed Lafar Tahir and Priyantha Fernando this morning.

Army foils prison escape attempt

A inmate’s attempt to escape from the Matara Prison Security Units, was foiled yesterday (April 09).

The inmate, had attempted to flee by jumping into the Nilwala River.

He was apprehended by personnel from the 3rd Volunteer Gemunu Watch, who intercepted him in a boat and handed him over to prison authorities.
