Narangala mountain range to become a sanctuary

Cabinet approval has been granted to a proposal by the Minister of Wildlife and Forest Conservation to make the Narangala mountain range a sanctuary.

The mountain range, which lies in the Badulla District 1450m above sea level is home to over a 100 springs, which provides water for rivers and fulfills the water necessities of villages situated down the rivers.

Hence, the 239,276 hectares upon which the mountain range is situated would be made into a sanctuary and any private land or land owned by the Janatha Estates Development Board would be expropriated accordingly.

Vijitha – Jaishankar meet in Oman

Indian Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar met with his Sri Lankan counterpart – Minister Vijitha Herath on the sidelines of the 8th Indian Ocean Conference in Oman.

Posting on X, the Indian Minister of External Affairs said that they assessed the wide-ranging cooperation between the two countries, during the bilateral talks.

“Took stock of our wide – ranging cooperation. Committed to the economic recovery and progress of Sri Lanka,” he added.

South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron found dead at home

South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron has been found dead at her home, a police official with knowledge of the case said on Sunday.

Kim, 24, was one of most promising actresses in South Korea, but her career took a hit after a drunk driving incident in 2022.

A friend who was going to meet Kim visited her home and discovered her and called the police, Yonhap News Agency said.

Police found no foul play, according to Yonhap.

The police official said police are investigating the cause of death but did not provide further details.

NPP govt. presents inaugural Budget (Live)

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Finance Minister, will present the inaugural budget of the new government to Parliament today (Feb. 17).

The budget speech, commencing at 10:30 am, will outline the government’s economic priorities and development plans.

The budget debate will run from February 18 to March 21, with the committee stage debate beginning on February 27. 

The final vote on the third reading of the budget is scheduled for March 21.
