A Sri Lanka Navy’s firefighting team from the Western Naval Command has promptly contained a fire that erupted unexpectedly in a container at the terminal of Bandaranaike Quay IV (BQ IV) in the Port of Colombo last night (Jan. 30).

At 7.45pm, smoke was observed emanating from a container at the BQ IV terminal and the Colombo Port Control Office had reached out to the Western Naval Command Operations Room for support from a Navy firefighting team.

In response to the alert, the Sri Lanka Navy swiftly mobilized a team specialized in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) affairs from the Western Naval Command. Firefighting vehicles were also deployed to the scene.

The Navy firefighters had successfully unlocked the container, uncovering that a portion of the stored cleaning chemicals had caught fire. With the help of port workers and the port fire brigade, the chemicals were safely removed to contain the fire and prevent its spread.
