The government of Australia handed over a state-of-the-art Shallow Water Multi-Beam Echo Sounder to the Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service (SLNHS) during a ceremony held at SLNS Rangalla today (18 Feb 25).

The formal ceremony was held under the auspices of the High Commissioner of Australia to Sri Lanka, Paul Stephens and the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, marking new chapter in the discipline of hydrography.

The Australian government provided the Sri Lanka Navy with this Multi Beam Echo Sounder to enhance its hydrographic capabilities. This advanced equipment will enable the Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service (SLNHS) to conduct precise hydrographic surveys, essential for creating nautical and electronic charts for international use. The device will also facilitate the production of high-precision nautical charts, ensuring safer maritime navigation.

Addressing the august gathering, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, on behalf of the government of Sri Lanka, extended heartfelt gratitude to the Australian government for the significant contribution. He emphasized that this initiative represents a pivotal step in advancing hydrographic discipline, aligning with the Safety of Life at Sea obligations. Vice Admiral Banagoda also highlighted that the state-of-the-art technology provided will accelerate hydrographic surveys, facilitate the creation of up-to-date nautical charts, and improve the safety and efficiency of maritime operations in Sri Lankan waters. He also noted that the Shallow Water Multi-Beam Echo Sounder, the first of its kind received by the Navy, will bring about a transformative change and greatly enhance the nation’s capacity to survey harbours, coastal zones, and vital waterways.

Adding further, he said that this advancement will bolster Sri Lanka’s national hydrographic framework. The Navy Commander also acknowledged Australia’s ongoing support for Sri Lanka’s maritime development, referencing previous contributions, including the provision of Bay-class vessels, Rathnadeepa and Mihikatha. He concluded by reaffirming the strong bilateral relations and cooperation between the two nations, rooted in a shared commitment to safe navigation, sustainable marine resource management, and strengthened regional maritime security.

Following the address by the Australian High Commissioner, the event featured special recognition for Able Seaman RBG Chinthaka of the Sri Lanka Navy. The sailor was recognized for his outstanding performance during the Hydrographic Surveying Initial Employment Training Course conducted by the Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic School.

Subsequent to the formal handing over / taking over procedures, the Australian High Commissioner and the Commander of the Navy, accompanied by a group of distinguished invitees, boarded the vessel P 267 to assess the operational capabilities of the newly installed equipment.

SLC denies making alleged salary payments to fmr. IGP Tennakoon

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has denied allegations raised by MP Hesha Withanage over paying former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon a salary of Rs. 150,000 and providing him with other perks.

The allegations were made by the MP during the Parliamentary debate on the Appropriation Bill held yesterday (March 18).

The full statement made by SLC in this regard is as follows :

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to categorically deny and strongly refute the baseless and false allegations made by Hon. MP Hesha Withanage during the Parliamentary debate on the Appropriation Bill held on 18th March 2025.
During the said debate, MP Withanage alleged that Sri Lanka Cricket has paid a sum of Rs. 150,000/= as a salary to Deshabandu Tennakoon, then Inspector General of Police, and further claimed that SLC had provided him with a laptop, mobile phone, and other perks as per an Executive Committee decision. It was also asserted that these actions amounted to bribery and that the officials of Sri Lanka Cricket should be held accountable under the provisions of law for offering a bribe.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to firmly state that these allegations are completely false, baseless, and devoid of any factual foundation.

We wish to state that Sri Lanka Cricket is acutely aware of its primary responsibility to ensure the highest level of security for foreign national teams, international tours, players, events, and visiting dignitaries, including state heads. As such, SLC continuously engages with Sri Lanka’s security personnel, including high-ranking army personnel and senior police officers, to maintain the safety and security of all involved.

In this regard, it is a common and essential practice to enlist the support of both active and retired high-ranking officers to ensure comprehensive safety measures during international cricket tours.

During the period when Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon served as the Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Western Province, SLC sought his expertise on security matters related to international tours. This request was made during a time when the country was experiencing a “New Normal’ situation emanating out of the Covid pandemic,’ where SLC had to take extra precautions to implement the “Covid Protocols’ enforced by the health authorities to ensure the safety of the players and officials engaged in playing international and domestic cricket tournaments. It is such measures that helped Sri Lanka Cricket conduct several international and domestic tournaments during the said time without any hindrance.

Following our request, as a mark of professionalism and adherence to official protocols, Mr. Tennakoon conveyed to SLC that he would require prior authorization from higher authorities due to his active duty status. Subsequently, Mr. Tennakoon informed SLC that, as an active police officer, he was not authorized to undertake any special tasks outside his official duties.

Nonetheless, he assured his readiness to provide necessary security assistance as required, considering the national significance of such engagements.

We categorically state that Sri Lanka Cricket has not made any payment, provided any laptop, mobile phone, or other perks to Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon, nor has he been engaged as a consultant or in any other capacity with SLC.

Sri Lanka Cricket strongly condemns the unfounded and misleading statements made by MP Hesha Withanage under the parliamentary privileges and urges responsible conduct when making public statements to avoid causing unnecessary harm to the reputation and integrity of institutions and individuals.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has confiscated a stock of Keeri Samba rice worth over Rs. 3.8 million.

The stocks were officially seized today (March 18) following a legal case against two shop officials in Colombo 12.

On February 11, the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court (No. 5) fined shop owner Abdul Jabbar Mohamed Siyas and manager Kuruppan Murugayya Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000, respectively, after they pleaded guilty to hoarding rice.

The case was filed after a raid conducted by the CAA revealed that the shop falsely claimed to be out of Kiri Samba rice, despite hiding 3,000 five-kilogram packs on the premises.

Under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, when a retailer is found guilty of falsely declaring goods unavailable, the court has the authority to confiscate the stock.
