New DG for Civil Aviation Authority

Air Vice Marshal (Retired) H.M.S.K.B. Kotakadeniya has been appointed as the new Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Civil Aviation Authority, by the Minister of Ports, Maritime Affairs, and Aviation – Nimal Siripala de Silva following Cabinet recommendation.

Mr. K.D.S. Ruwanchachandra, the Secretary of the Ministry also took part in this event.

The nomination follows Mr. P.A. Jayakantha’s retirement from the CAA.

Air Vice Marshal Kotakadeniya holds Postgraduate Degrees from the University of Madras, India, in security and strategic studies, as well as from the University of Colombo in International Relations. In addition, he has received further education in defense universities in the United States of America and China. He retired from the Sri Lanka Air Force in 2020 after 34 years of service.

03 including J’Pura consultant neurosurgeon, remanded

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has remanded 03 suspects, including consultant neurosurgeon Dr. Maheshi Surasinghe Wijerathna of Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, until June 24 over allegations of selling medicines at inflated prices through a third party.

The other suspects are hospital management assistant Kekulandala Liyanage Indika and Nimal Ranjith, an employee of a private institution run by the doctor.

They were arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) yesterday (June 17) and produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala.

The Magistrate granted CIABOC’s request for remand, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Opposition to lodge international complaint against Speaker

The Opposition has announced plans to lodge complaints with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Inter-Parliamentary Union over what it describes as anti-democratic conduct by the Speaker.

Deputy Organizer Ajith P. Perera stated this, following 02 press briefings held after opposition members, including those from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), walked out of Parliament yesterday (June 17) in protest.

They claimed the Speaker denied them the opportunity to address concerns regarding the impact of the Iran-Israel conflict on Sri Lanka.

Heavy rains expected in some areas today

Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts today (June 18), the Department of Meteorology said.

Several spells of showers will occur in the North-western province.

Showers or thundershowers can be expected at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or night.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, Southern and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee district.

The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
