New gazette issued on stock and securities!

The Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies has issued an extraordinary gazette containing several directives regarding registered stock and securities.

Accordingly, the owners holding stock or securities as at June 28 would be given the opportunity to convert or exchange them.

The Ministry Secretary and the Registrar of Public Debt have been authorized to decide on an amount of the Treasury Bonds as may be necessary for the conversion or exchange of the securities.

According to the Gazette, the same officials have been given authority to create and issue Treasury Bonds as may be necessary for the purpose of paying any expenses incurred in the creation and issue of Treasury Bonds.

The Gazette has been issued as per a Cabinet decision taken on June 28.

Campaigning for 2024 General Election ends at midnight today

All campaign activities for the 2024 general election will end at midnight tonight, as announced by the National Election Commission Chairman, RMAL Ratnayake. 

A “silent period” will commence from midnight and continue until election day on November 14, during which all campaigning is strictly prohibited.

He also reminds candidates of the election that the operations of campaign offices which have been established on an electorate basis, must be concluded from midnight of the 12th of November.

He says that from that point onwards, it is only offices of the party or independent group established in each electoral district, that may remain operational. 

The Chairman of the National Election Commission further notes that candidates may continue to maintain campaign offices in their residences until midnight on the 12th of November. 

However, he adds that no propaganda material may be displayed there. 

In addition, he says that if there is a campaign office or a residence of a candidate located within a 500-metre radius from a polling station, no propaganda material should be displayed there either.

Senior State Counsel Shaveendra Wickrama interdicted for disobeying orders

The Attorney General’s Department has interdicted Senior State Counsel (SSC) Shaveendra Wickrama.

SSC Wickrama was interdicted on charges of disobeying the orders of his superiors. The officer has more than 20 years of service at the AG’s Department.

The Sunday Times understands that the Public Service Commission has approved the interdiction of the officer.

SSC Wickrama has also lodged two complaints regarding several matters with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and the Keselwatta Police.

The AG’s Department is due to hold an inquiry on SSC Wickrama regarding the charges against him.

Complete 3rd phase of Central Expressway by 2026 end – Vijitha

Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation – Vijitha Herath has urged to complete work of the 3rd phase of the Central Expressway by Dec. 31, 2026.

The 3rd phase spans from Pothuhera to Rambukkana.

The minister had said this after inspecting work at the section today (Nov. 09).
