Fairly heavy showers expected in some areas today

The Department of Meteorology says that showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts after 1.00 p.m today (May 05).

Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places elsewhere on the island during the afternoon or night.

Showers may occur in the Western province and in Mannar, Puttalam, Galle and Matara in the morning too.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central and Uva provinces and in Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts during the morning.

LG election candidate shot in Kalutara

A candidate contesting the upcoming local government election was injured in a shooting incident in Kalutara, police said.

The victim has been admitted to Nagoda Hospital. His condition is reported to be non-life-threatening.

Police investigations are underway to arrest the suspects.
