“Although Amaraweera said, it was not decided to support the SLPP”

The Lanka Labour Congress said that the statement made to media by the UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera that the UPFA would extend their support to Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and join the SLPP is completely false.

The Deputy Chairman of the Lanka Labour Congress and Treasurer M. Rameshwaram said this issuing a statement.

He further stated that they would discuss the matter on who they should support, adding that no decision had been taken to support any particular candidate so far.

Meanwhile, he also refuted claims made by a UNP-MP that his party would support the UNF candidate Sajith Premadasa.

Rameshwaram said that they would discuss the matter with both candidates and the party’s executive committee would take a final decision on the 13th regarding who they would be supporting.

Will contest under the Chair symbol - Dayasiri

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the SLFP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said that if the SLFP was to contest independently there is a great probability that someone who should not come into power would get appointed.

He made this statement at a media briefing held at the SLFP Headquarters yesterday (09), adding that they would not allow the SLFP to be betrayed by anyone.

Therefore, he said the party had decided to support a candidate who would not sell-off the country’s national assets and someone who loves this country.

Her also noted that they had decided to support Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who is in line with leftist progressive forces, while protecting the identity and integrity  of the SLFP. He also assured that the SLFP would ensure that  anyone working with the SLFP would not be treated unfairly.

Jayasekara said that they would set up a government together with the progressive forces and forge ahead, adding that the process of building up the SLFP would commence after the presidential election.
