CID to probe SLC issuance of broadcasting rights

The Committee on Public Enterprise has recommended the Ministry of Sports to direct the Criminal Investigations Department to conduct a stringent investigation, into the issuance of broadcasting rights by Sri Lanka Cricket.

The COPE issued the recommendation taking into consideration a Rs.3.1 billion loss incurred by SLC, after it allegedly granted broadcasting rights to a company that submitted a lower bid.

The COPE convened under the patronage of Chairman Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti in Parliament yesterday.

It was also revealed that SLC had agreed to donate Rs.50 million to the Malwathu Chapter, after approval by the SLC Executive Committee, despite the requirement to pay a sum of Rs.26.2 million in tax for 30 years for the construction of a Sri Lanka Cricket run training university.

However despite approval being granted, COPE revealed that only a sum of Rs.25 million was donated to the Malwattu Chapter instead of Rs.50 million.

The COPE instructed the Auditor General to investigate and determine if any financial discrepancies had taken place.

COPE also recommended that the legal proceedings followed when hiring Former Sri Lanka Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha, be subject to investigation.
