Speaking to media, he said that he does not think it should be the priority at the moment.
Vehicle imports have been suspended since last March amid a weakening economy due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, at a meeting of the government MPs on Oct. 24 chaired by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a discussion was held to import duty free cars for MPs and ministers.
At a media briefing held the next day, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) - MP Sagara Kariyawasam had replied to media queries raised in this regard as follows :
“It is not a decision to import vehicles. During an earlier attempt to do so, MPs requested to postpone the measure due to the prevailing economic problems in the country. But now, the time has come to revisit this issue. The matter was only taken up but no decision was taken," he said.
