Opposition wins Australian election!

Australia’s Labor party leader has claimed victory in the national election after Prime Minister Scott Morrison conceded defeat even as the votes are still being counted, ending nearly a decade of conservative government.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese is scheduled to be sworn in as the new Prime Minister.

Australia's general election, which had 17 million eligible voters, began at 8 a.m. local time today and ended at 6 p.m.

Economy - Inflation - Migration issues and climate change were the main topics in the Australian federal election this time.

This election holds significance for Sri Lanka as it was contested by three candidates of Sri Lankan origin including a female candidate.

While two candidates of Sri Lankan origin contested for the Holt seat, Sri Lankan, Cassandra Fernando, defeated Sri Lankan Ranj Perera for the Holt seat in Melbourne.

It is noteworthy that a large number of ministers, including the defence and finance ministers of the previous Liberal government, were defeated this time.

A labour government will be established in Australia after nine years.
