It has been revealed that several police officers who were a headache to traffickers by carrying out drug raids, have been planned to be killed and the recently retired former Chief Inspectors of Police Manjula De Silva and E.S. Dharmapriya and the Police Intelligence Division has informed the Inspector General of Police that these officers are a major target.
Sources of the police department also state that a Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Western Province has advised several police officers who are currently in service, to be cautious and be safe.
Several police officers directly involved in drug and underworld operations had previously reported to the Victim Protection Division and Police Headquarters that they had received threats from organized criminals.
It has been further learned from the intelligence information that these threats have been made by a drug dealer and two underworld members from Gampaha and Kalutara district, who have been accused of most of the 20 murders in the country over the past month.
However, when contacted to inquire in this regard, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that he was not aware of such security being beefed up for police officers under threat.
However, it is said that most of the 20 murders that took place after May 30 were on the instructions of organized criminals such as Ganemulla Sanjeeva, Panadura Kudu Salidu, Batuwatte Chamara and Harak Kata.
