Postal strike commences

The postal services workers commenced their strike action this morning (27).

The strike action was initiated in protest of plans to lease out historic post office buildings for hotel projects.

The Postal Union Convener Chinthaka Bandara told media that around 25,000 postal workers will be participating in this strike action.

Speaking on the inconvenience caused due to this strike he said many issues will crop up island wide due to the postal strike.

He pointed out that applications for grade one admissions and numerous examination admissions are in the post currently and it will hamper these processes.

However, Minister Abdul Haleem said his ministry had taken measures to ensure the smooth running of essential postal services.
