Minimum traffic fine to go up to Rs. 2,500

The minimum fine for a traffic offence is to be increased from the present Rs. 500, to Rs. 2,500, according to a 2017 budget proposal.

The fine can be paid through the phone.

Presenting the budget, minister Ravi Karunayake said electric cars will be introduced to reduce road accidents.

Owners of school vans will be given loans with up to 75 per cent concessions to change their vans to 32-seaters.

Also, school vans and three wheelers will be regulated.
