Rs. 190m rent on equipment to flatten garbage dump Featured

The Colombo Municipal Council spent Rs. 195 million in 2015 and 2016 on the excavators and bulldozers it had rented to flatten the garbage dump at Meethotamulla, reports say.

The maintenance costs of the garbage dump were Rs. 34 m in 2010, Rs. 54 m in 2012 and Rs. 182 m in 2015.

All the equipment had been rented from a company at Denzil Kobbekaduwa Mawatha in Battaramulla.

Despite having spent such huge amounts to flatten the garbage dump, it collapsed last April, causing loss of life and property.
