All elections under electorate system

The existing preferential voting system places self before country for politicians, says president Maithripala Sirisena, noting that the result is that people’s aspirations cannot be fulfilled.

At a meeting with SLFP members of the north central provincial council yesterday (16), he said it was a victory for the people that the local government election could now be held under the electorate system.

Stressing the need to hold all elections of the country under a single system, he said he was committed to hold all future elections under the electorate system.
